Description:

Literacy and access have become critical areas for review within both classrooms and workplace settings. Coming out of the pandemic, a larger gap in both abilities and cognitive capabilities was recognized with the outcomes drastically impacting how some individuals learned and lived life. The need to bridge this gap created a need to address issues which may require a new way of thinking along with modified approaches to how devices are used. This presentation focuses on how both new and new versions of these devices can be adapted into multiple environments, giving individuals the best support. The research behind the devices as well as applications from the field will be presented while many of the devices will be shared with participants for their engagement.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Participants will differentiate the types of uses for Reading Pens within the building highlighting the ability to access physical information as well as serving as basic communication devices.

• Participants will compare various assistive technology devices used for access to understand which ones might best fit the needs of their students or individuals.

• Participants will discuss how devices can be utilized within the pillars of UDL to strengthen learning and production for individuals in multiple settings.
