Description:
This session focuses on the importance of text-to-speech (TTS) technology as an essential accommodation for students with disabilities, promoting independence and self-regulated learning. Participants will explore the challenges faced by those tasked with determining eligibility for TTS and those implementing its use in the classroom. The Protocol for Accommodations in Reading (PAR) provides a tool for data-based decision-making. The discussion will address the disconnect between Universal Design for Learning (UDL) ideals and state regulations, and participants will be equipped to advocate for TTS use across instruction and assessment. Ultimately, attendees will leave with actionable strategies to enhance student access to learning through TTS.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Analyze a student's need for a reading accommodation
• Compare and contrast an automated screening tool and an individualized protocol for examining reading needs
• Use current research as a foundation to advocate for improved TTS decision-making and implementation in their professional environment.
Disclosures:
Linda is a co-author of the Protocol for Reading Accommodations (Don Johnston, 2012). She has no financial relationships to disclose.
