Description

Recorded: March 10, 2022

Length: 90-Minutes

People with complex communication needs are often not given opportunities to write. Research shows emerging writers benefit from using alternate pencils, such as their AAC systems, and seeing others using the same method to compose for authentic purposes. This webinar will demonstrate how emerging writers can use their AAC systems to compose using a variety of authoring tools for authentic purposes.

We will review the writing process, give examples of how emergent writers can use their AAC systems to write, and discuss the balance of a combining spelling/alphabetic formulation and whole-word composition. Supporting emerging writers can be fun, meaningful, and authentic and this webinar will give work samples and practical tips to engage your emergent writers.

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least 3 authentic purposes your students can use speech-generating devices to compose written work during the day.

  • Compare and contrast using alphabetic and whole word methods of composition for emergent writers.

  • Describe at least 3 strategies to support emergent writing.
