Alek is a new kind of text-based AAC app designed to help users respond more naturally during real-time conversation. Built with the latest advances in artificial intelligence, Alek goes beyond traditional word prediction to offer full-sentence suggestions based on what’s already been said – making communication faster, more responsive, and more personal.
Where most AAC apps suggest the most common next word or phrase, Alek listens to the flow of conversation and suggests complete responses that match the context, tone, and topic. It’s a tool designed to support more natural communication – not just faster typing.
How it works:
- Understands the conversation so far
Alek tracks the last few messages in a conversation to generate suggestions that make sense in context. - Learns about the user
Users (or therapists/carers) can add background information – like personality traits, interests, and common phrases – to personalize suggestions. - Responds to typed cues
If a user starts typing a word or two, Alek builds suggestions around their intent. - Powered by AI, built for accessibility
Alek uses advanced AI language models to suggest 2–3 complete, relevant responses – helping users keep up in dynamic conversation.
Alek was built by the son of an AAC user with MND, and developed in close collaboration with speech therapists and AAC users. It’s currently free to use and available on web and iOS.
