Description:

High AAC system abandonment rates persist due to inadequate selection processes. Special education teachers and speech-language pathologists report feeling underprepared to match AAC systems to students’ complex communication needs. This mixed-methods study examined practitioner perspectives on feature matching decision-making matrices designed to guide AAC system selection. Participants included pre- and in-service special education teachers and speech-language pathologists from two southern U.S. school districts. The presentation will share the participants’ perspectives on the matrices, their advantages and disadvantages, and other future practical implications for feature-matching.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to describe key components of feature matching decision-making matrices for AAC system selection.

• As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to outline the advantages and limitations of using decision-making matrices.

• As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to identify the essential components of a comprehensive AAC assessment.
